Building is well underway and we’re FINALLY preparing to install our bales. That’s where community comes in – the old fashioned barn raising! Details are listed below, and please feel free to reach out to us on socials with any questions, or email strawhouse@thebarefootpear.com.

Dates: 21, 22, 23 February 2025
Ideally we prefer people join for all three days as it helps us get into the rhythm of working with each other but if you’re only available for one or two days please still reach out to discuss.
Location:
We’re located in Deloraine, Tasmania. It’s 45 minutes from both Launceston airport and the Spirit of Tasmania in Devonport.
We ask people travelling from interstate and camping onsite to arrive on the Thursday to get settled so we can get straight into work Friday morning.
Accommodation:
Camping is available on our property and there are several accommodation options in town.
Food:
All meals will be provided over the three days. If you’re keen on the community vibes but less so on the baling itself we’ll be after one or two kitchen helpers to help with meals and clean up/housekeeping.
Experience required:
None! We’ll teach you everything you need to know for the jobs that need to be done. Strawbale construction is very beginner friendly. A reasonable level of physical fitness is ideal but if you have physical limitations please let us know beforehand to discuss if we can make it work for you.
Please no children unless you have first discussed it with us, as this is a construction site and not safe for unsupervised children.
What you’ll learn:
Hands on experience working with strawbales for construction
Using power tools to re-size and re-shape bales
Compressing bales using strapping and hydraulic jacks
We’ll also host optional informal sessions in the evenings for those interested in learning about natural building, passive solar and sustainable design, passivhaus and energy efficiency principles, budgeting – whatever people are interested in learning more about.
